Matthew P. Cohen - Partner

MATTHEW P. COHEN is a 2005 graduate of Colgate University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Religion. He received his Juris Doctor from Valparaiso University School of Law in 2008. During law school, Mr. Cohen was a Judicial Intern to the Honorable Leo M. Gordon, United States Court of International Trade.  Prior to joining the Firm, during the 2008-2009 term, he served as law clerk to the Honorable Douglas M. Fasciale, Presiding Judge, Superior Court of New Jersey, Union County, Law Division.

Mr. Cohen has extensive experience representing insurers in complex insurance coverage matters, including general liability, professional liability, fiduciary liability, and fidelity bond claims.  Mr. Cohen also advises insurers with respect to regulatory and compliance matters, policy form drafting, underwriting and risk assessments.  His practice also includes conducting claims review and investigations and coverage analyses for primary, umbrella, and excess insurers.

Mr. Cohen also focuses his practice on the representation of employee benefit plan and financial services providers.  As national counsel to a professional and fiduciary liability insurer, Mr. Cohen represents clients in state and federal courts across the country, defending service providers against claims for breach of contract, negligence, and breach of fiduciary duty under ERISA.

Mr. Cohen also has experience representing insurers and insureds under various insurance programs, including an owner-controlled insurance program for a large public construction project in New Jersey, and the representation of the program’s insureds in wrongful death, personal injury, property damage, and inverse condemnation actions. His practice also includes representing clients in employment, trademark, and complex construction defect matters.

Mr. Cohen is admitted to practice in the State of New Jersey, United States District Court for the District of New Jersey, United States District Court for the District of Colorado, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.
