Robert J. Schmitt - Counsel to the Firm

ROBERT J. SCHMITT joined MDM&C as Counsel to the Firm, adding more than 40 years of broad international experience to the Firm’s tax practice. 

Mr. Schmitt is a cross-border tax lawyer with a highly creative mindset and extensive, hands-on experience in global complex transactions. His practice focuses on in-bound tax planning and representation of non-US persons, including investors in US real estate, Chinese persons and Green Card holders.  His clients have included one of the most highly recognized global banks, as well as the bank’s London office.

He has been consistently recognized by clients for his proactive approach to identifying planning opportunities and coordinating implementation, documentation and execution of strategies. Mr. Schmitt has repeatedly demonstrated his ability as a highly successful cross-border tax strategist in achieving substantial tax efficiencies.

Prior to joining the Firm, Mr. Schmitt practiced international tax law with the New York office of a 500 person law firm.   He previously served as chief tax officer for a global pharmaceutical company, was a member of the International Tax Group of a Big Four accounting firm in New York, and was Head of U.S. Taxation for the Unilever Group.  Mr. Schmitt’s hands-on cross-border tax planning experience spans Canada, Europe, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East.

He received a LL.M. (in Taxation) from New York University School of Law and a J.D. degree from Notre Dame Law School, where he was a founder of the Notre Dame International Law Society as well as Director of the Notre Dame Legal Aid and Defender Association.  He received his B.A. degree from John Carroll University and studied at the University of Michigan Business School.

Mr. Schmitt is a long-standing active member of the American Bar Association, Section of Taxation, Committee on U.S. Activities of Foreigners and Tax Treaties and has participated on numerous cross-border tax panels.  He is a founder of the European Tax Policy Forum in London and former member of the Tax Council and the Tax Executives Institute. 

In 2017, Mr. Schmitt was a speaker at Columbia University to a group of 60 Chinese entrepreneurs who had traveled to New York to learn about starting businesses in the U.S. and also investing in U.S. commercial real estate.
