Overview
MELANIE A. FOLEY is Of Counsel in the Firm’s Tampa, Florida office and is a member of both the Bankruptcy Practice Group and the Construction, Fidelity & Surety Practice Group. Ms. Foley focuses her practice on commercial bankruptcy and restructuring, complex business and financial transactions, construction law, and surety and fidelity coverage litigation.
Prior to joining McElroy Deutsch, Ms. Foley worked in a supporting capacity on insolvency and restructuring matters throughout Florida, Alabama, Massachusetts, Delaware, and New York. Her work includes debtor, creditor and fiduciary representations, Chapter 11 and adversary proceedings, complex out-of-court workouts and restructurings, as well as creditor committee matters. Her practice has also included advising clients on corporate and securities matters, including public and private capital market transactions, corporate governance and regulatory compliance.
Her prior experience also includes serving as in-house counsel to a major financial lending and banking institution in Boston, and later as in-house counsel to a registered investment adviser and broker-dealer group. In these roles, she advised on and supported transactional and investment practices involving SEC, FINRA, and state regulatory compliance, mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance, commercial lending, securitization, debt-related transactional analysis, and other complex transactional and investment-related matters.
Ms. Foley is actively engaged in professional and civic organizations within the Tampa Bay community. She is an active member of The Junior League of Tampa, where she serves on the Leadership Council as Secretary for the 2025–2026 term and has been slated as Treasury Assistant on the Management Council for the 2026-2027 term. Her community involvement also includes volunteer service with Feeding Tampa Bay, Metropolitan Ministries, The Laundry Project, USF Women in Leadership & Philanthropy, and The Heart Gallery of Tampa.
Ms. Foley earned her LL.M. in Business and Commercial Law from Boston College Law School with a concentration in Tax Law, and her Juris Doctor from New England Law | Boston (Dean’s List; Public Service Honor Roll). She also holds dual Bachelor of Arts degrees in Political Science and International Studies from the University of South Florida, and completed a Graduate Certificate in Modern British Politics at Selwyn College, University of Cambridge.
